Weekly Round Up : July 26 - Aug. 1

Consider this your required reading for the week.  There is a chance we here at 1BlueJaysWay may have some more news on Hechevarria for you real soon.....

Consider this your required viewing for the week.  Fleeced em.  Absolutely fleeced em.

Glenn hits for the cycle as Lugnuts beat Kings, 9-5

LANSING, Mich. – Brad Glenn hit for the fifth cycle in team history and the first since 2007, helping the Lansing Lugnuts (17-13; 53-46) chop down the Clinton LumberKings (14-15; 51-47), 9-5, on a Monday Summer Fun Day on Jackson Field.
Glenn singled in the first inning, homered in the third, dropped in a fluke sun-aided double in the fifth, and then broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run triple off of reliever Jose Jimenez (2-4) in the seventh inning to give the Lugnuts the lead for good.
He capped off the game by drawing a walk in the eighth inning, loading the bases ahead of A.J. Jimenez's three-run game-clinching double.
The Lugnuts' previous cycle was accomplished by Travis Snider on July 7, 2007, at Fort Wayne. Corey Patterson (1999), Donnie Hood (2003), and Chip Cannon (2005) were the other Nuts to achieve the cycle in the team's 15-year history.

Gotta love the old sun aided double trick!

Sobolewski named FSL Player of the Week

Dunedin Blue Jays third baseman Mark Sobolewski has been named the Florida State League Player of the Week for the time frame of July 19-25. He becomes the fourth Dunedin player to win the honor this season, joining catcher Travis d'Arnaud, outfielder Welinton Ramirez and super utility player John Tolisano.
Sobolewski was fantastic in the weekend series against Bradenton, going 7-for-12 with two home runs and two doubles. On the week, he was 11-for-26 (.423) with three home runs and the two doubles. He also drove in 10 runs and scored eight times himself.
Sobolewski was named a First Half All-Star this season with the Lansing Lugnuts, the Single-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, where he hit .313 with four home runs and 24 RBIs. He also added 15 doubles.
So far with Dunedin this season, the 23-year-old is hitting .274 with four home runs and 22 RBIs, nearly the same numbers he had with Lansing, but in 51 fewer plate.

This guy is slowly moving up the depth chart @ 3B.

Courtesy of You Don't Know Dick:

Consider that among all MLB outfielders, Bautista ranks: first in home runs and outfield assists; second in RBIs, extra-base hits, OPS, slugging and bases-on-balls; and third in runs scored.
“He’s a young guy that can still play third base for you and play the outfield, play first base, so that’s what I would do, but that’s just me,” Gaston added. “I can talk to him about playing a certain position and it’s, ‘Wherever you need me.’ Managers always appreciate guys like that on your ballclub.”
The Jays need his versatility and don’t need to save the money. They have him for one more season. If he goes through the arbitration process the Jays could then either trade him at next year’s deadline or begin negotiations for an extension if he proves in 2011 that 2010 was no fluke.

Dick nailed it.  Doesn't happen often so savor the flavor sir.

Courtesy of CBC Sports:

The 29-year-old Mike Jacobs is a lifetime .253 hitter with the Mets, Florida Marlins and Kansas City Royals.
The left-handed hitter averaged .208 in 28 at-bats this season with New York, which designated Jacobs for assignment on April 18. He cleared waivers and has spent most of the season at AAA, hitting .260 with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs in 86 games.
Last season, he hit 19 home runs and added 61 runs batted in while making $3.25 million US with the Royals last year.
Jacobs had 32 home runs and 93 RBIs in 2008 with Florida.
He provides some depth for the Blue Jays should they choose to deal free-agent-to-be Lyle Overbay.

Depth move at AAA.  He does have almost 2000 MLB at bats under his belt but he strikes out a fucking tonne and has amassed a lifetime .313 OBP in the big leagues.

Courtesy of Husker Extra:

In the three weeks since he became an eighth-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays, Nebraska City pitcher Logan Ehlers has turned down two offers to sign.
“We had the (signing-bonus) number set, and everything,” he said, “so right now we’re playing the waiting game.”
That’s usually how it works for anyone who has college aspirations but is in a position where they could command a large enough signing bonus to head straight to professional ball.

Don't know how this one slipped past the goalie but I just had to share it.  We gotta get this kid to sign before he strikes out another 20 batters in a game.

Courtesy of MLBTR:

Many of the best trade chips in baseball play for the Toronto Blue Jays, but the team held onto all of them when their rivals didn’t meet the club’s asking price. Scott Downs, Jason Frasor, Kevin Gregg, Jose Bautista and John Buck remain in Toronto for one simple reason: in the end, no team presented GM Alex Anthopoulos with an overwhelming offer.
“I don’t think we were that close today,” Anthopoulos said. “There were things we had on the table that were available to us, but not enough to make us make a trade.”

Translation: Stop trying to fuck with the new guy everyone.

Camp to have workload limited: Toronto RP Shawn Camp has been given a heavy workload this season but manager Cito Gaston would like to limit his innings, going forward, reports MLB.com Monday. "I want to do that with him," Gaston said on Monday. "I had a little talk with him about that." Gaston has frequently turned to Camp to clean up messes but will try to limit that going forward. "Of course, he wants to go," Gaston said. "He wants to pitch. Some kind of way, if I can give him off through the next few days, it'd be great -- hopefully. I don't know if it's going to happen. Maybe a couple of days and then if we use him, then we have the off-day."
(Updated 07/26/2010).
Fantasy Analysis
Camp entered Monday with a 3-1 record and a 2.92 ERA over 49 1/3 innings. Camp has allowed six runs over nine innings in his last 10 appearances, however, and opponents have been hitting .410 against him over that span. Camp has struggled of late and Gaston believes it has something to do with his workload. "He's only had a couple rough times out there this year," Gaston said. "That's going to happen." Camp is not in line for save chances and remains just a middle-relief option for Fantasy leagues that care about them.

Lind a future first baseman?: Toronto DH/OF Adam Lind is going to see playing time at first base down the stretch. MLB.com reports part of the reason why Toronto is going to give Lind a look at first base because the Blue Jays will be looking for a starting first baseman for the 2011 season. "We want to see him play first to see if he can play over there," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said. "But, you know, in the offseason there's still some first basemen out there that you can go get."
(Updated 07/30/2010).
Fantasy Analysis
Lind has played most of his major-league career in left field or at DH. He played some first base in college and has spelled current 1B Lyle Overbay in a handful of games. Overbay is a free agent after the season and Toronto just traded away prospect Brett Wallace on Thursday, so looking at first-base options now is clearly a priority. The main thing is that Lind is still getting regular at-bats for Toronto. His .225 average and moderate power numbers in 2010 have been disappointing. Lind has been doing well in July, batting .301 with five homers and 11 RBI in 22 games, so there is hope he can still perform like a high-end Fantasy option down the stretch.

Return of Travis Snider forces Cito Gaston to get creative with Blue Jays lineup

Snider, considered one of the team's future cornerstones, will be shuffled around into different spots whenever fellow outfielders Fred Lewis, Jose Bautista, Adam Lind and Vernon Wells, third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and first baseman Lyle Overbay get a day off.
He'll likely hit in the spot of whoever he's subbing in for, including leadoff hitter Lewis.
"You know, I've thought about that here and there, and if I take Lewis out of the lineup we're not going to put Bautista in the first spot, so it might be Snider up there. He's pretty much my choice if I go that way," said Gaston. "If I have Lewis in the lineup, then Snider will go somewhere else. It's going to be a little mix and match."

This is the article that set off the shitshow on Twitter that I wrote about earlier.  I figured there may be a chance Snider was being sat down until the deadline because a spot was about to open up.  That didn't materialize, so now we are going to roll with this roving platoon for a couple of weeks and see what happens.  Could end up messy.  Especially with dip shit The Cito "managing" it.

Much has been made of his poor stats — he's been caught stealing 27 times to go with his pedestrian batting average — but Anthony Gose says he's deliberately taken steps backwards in some areas in order to take a few steps forward down the road.
"When you're learning something new the success may not be there right away, results aren't always instant," he said. "I feel I've made tremendous progress from last year to this year.
"Defensively I feel I've gotten better, better routes to the ball, I've worked on making better throws to the bases. Baserunning I feel the adjustments I've made have just made myself better, better reads of the pitcher, getting better jumps. ...
"Offensively I feel that I've progressed also, maybe not in statistical means, but mentally at the plate, and also physically, mechanically, I feel I've progressed to some degree and it will all come together."

I heard that he is the 3rd youngest player in High A or something like that.  Patience is a virtue everyone.....

Courtesy of John Lott @ National Post:

TORONTO - Anthony Gose knows exactly what the critics are saying.
After almost two full pro seasons, he should be a better hitter. He steals a bunch of bases, but gets caught too often. He covers a lot of ground in centre field but makes too many fundamental mistakes on defence.
"Everything has been baby steps. I'm 19, and I have a lot of learning to do," said Gose, one day after his unexpected trade to the Toronto Blue Jays. "I've got a long ways to go before I'm a complete player."

He made his first start last night for Dunedin the high Class-A Florida State League, switching from the Phillies' FSL club a few miles south in Clearwater.
Dunedin coaches promptly began to work on "refining [his] approach at the plate," Gose said in a conference call.
"We started addressing those matters here already on my first day," he said.

Maybe they DID have the "you run like Hayes but you hit like shit" speech already!

Courtesy of Fan Graphs:

Wallace is pretty much just the opposite. His game is so dependent on offense, that even getting to 2-3 WAR consistently will be an issue. After Lance Berkman moves out of Houston, Wallace is the future at first base. He’s not good there, and is surely somewhere worse than 2.5 runs below average. To even reach 3 WAR, he’d have to produce 25 runs with the bat to be worth three wins. And given the fact that he’s never walked 50 times or hit 25 home runs in any season, getting to a .370 wOBA seems impossible.
Houston didn’t do well today. With their best chance to finally acquire a player they could build their future around, they acquired two players with role player ceilings.

Brett made his MLB debut on Saturday with Houston.  He finished up 0 for 4 while playing 1B and hitting 6th in their line up.  Please refrain from crying about this.  Everything is gonna work out later.  Trust me.

Weekly Round Up : June 28 - July 4

Consider this your required reading for the week.  Drew is rock solid as usual.

Courtesy of King Jordan:

NEW YORK -- The Blue Jays will have a trio of players at Angel Stadium in Anaheim for this year's All-Star Game on July 13.  On Sunday, it was announced that outfielders Vernon Wells and Jose Bautista, along with catcher John Buck, will represent Toronto on the American League's elite squad as reserves. It marks the first career All-Star selections for Bautista and Buck and the third for Wells.
Bautista and Wells were each selected in peer balloting, while Buck -- second in voting by his peers for his position -- was named as a replacement for injured Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez. The three All-Stars are the most for the Jays in one year since the club sent five to the Midsummer Classic in 2006.

Here are your All Stars for 2010.  Thank God none of our pitchers will be going to Anaheim.  Navin is pumped for Vernon and Ian is stoked for Bautista.  Congratulations to all.

Last year, Scott Rolen told me he wanted to be traded because his family didn't like living in Toronto. The Cincinnati Reds showed a strong interest in him from the beginning. For three weeks, we went back and forth with Cincinnati, and the deal finally got done close to the deadline. Actually, it was almost too close to the deadline. As we were trying to send all the details to the commissioner's office, the fax machine stopped working. Here I am, kicking the fax machine, and screaming at Rolen's agent, saying, "Send the agreement again!" (Rolen had to sign off on the deal because of his no-trade clause.) It took us about five tries to finally get the fax through. We got it into the commissioner's office with less than a minute to spare.

J.P. talks about his old job.  I could say a lot of things here but truly I'm just relieved this pipsqueak was run outta town.

Brett Wallace, 1B - Triple-A Las Vegas (TOR): Wallace made this list back on April 19th after hitting 4 HR's in his first 11 games and with Lyle Overbay off to a 4-for-50 start with the Blue Jays. Since, the Overbay-bashing has died down a bit as he hasn't been terrible (.265 BA, 7 HR, 15 2B, 25 RBI since April 19th) and the 23 year-old Wallace had just 4 BB's and 32 K's in the month of May. However, the Blue Jays, who were 31-22 and 3.5 games out of 1st Place at the beginning of the month, have gone 9-14 since and are 7.5 games out. In another division, you could still call the Jays contenders. In the AL East, it's safe to say that they can start looking towards next year. Which is why it might make sense to bring up their first baseman of the future, Wallace, while he is on his hottest streak of the season (.450 BA, 3 HR over last 10 games) and with Overbay coming off of a week in which he had just three singles in 19 AB's. Not to be overshadowed, designated hitter Adam Lind is hitting just .203 (.148 BA in June) and could also be in danger of losing AB's to Wallace.

I'm beginning to wonder if the impending Overbay deal is actually going to turn into the impending Overbay DFA.  If we can't move him at the deadline, look for him to be on waivers at the very least in August.

Courtesy of Globe Sports:

General manager Alex Anthopoulos said that Marcum would undergo an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) examination, possibly on Monday. He and manager Cito Gaston both expect Marcum back after the All-Star Break.
“I didn’t mention going on the DL, but I did mention maybe the possibility of sliding back in the rotation towards the end of next week,” said Marcum, who is 7-4 (3.44) in 17 starts with 88 strikeouts and 27 walks. “I thought with the off day, we could do that and everybody could stay on their regular day’s rest.”

I wonder if AA wanted to avoid Marcum getting selected to the All Star team?  I wonder.....

Courtesy of Pro Rumors:

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays have made an offer to elite Mexican pitching prospect Luis Heredia. According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have a $2.5 million bid and the Blue Jays have a $2.8 million bid.
Heredia’s rights are controlled by the Veracruz team in Mexico and they will keep three-quarters of whatever bonus Heredia receives. However, Heredia will have most of the say – if not the final word – in where he goes.
Heredia, 15, is a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher with the potential of four above-average major-league pitchers. He cannot be signed until he turns 16 on August 16.

I got nothing to add.  Not much info on this 15 year old out there right now.  Stay tuned.

Courtesy of You Don't Know Dick @ The Star:

The Jays have to make a decision on Hill following the 2010 season, one that will be made more difficult if his struggles continue for the entire season. The 28-year-old’s original four-year contract, one with imagination and innovation that helped make the reputation of Alex Anthopoulos when he was an assistant GM, runs through 2011.
But there are club options for 2012-13-14 totalling $26 million (U.S.). The Jays must inform Hill after this season if they want to pick up all three option years. He becomes a free agent after the ‘14 season. If they wait until after the 2011 season, the club can only accept the 2012-13 options and he becomes a free agent a year earlier, that off-season. They could also decline all three option years and make him free after 2011. Whoever thought that would be an issue?
Hill’s offensive performance, if it does not pick up soon, will become a big issue.

I wish Dick had the balls to open up the comment feature on all of his "work".  Wow.  Just wow.  Newsflash for you Dick: Aaron's team friendly options will be picked up, whether you like it or not.

For those that may have missed it, I did a Q@A during today's Blue Jays' game on Twitter. I'll try to do these from time to time. You can follow me at @MLBastian. Here are today's questions and answers, in 140 characters or less...

Q- RT @Kellardens: Am I the only one that thinks Cito is going through the motions?
A- You're probably not alone, but I wouldn't describe Cito that way. I think Jays and Cito both looking forward to the future.
Q- RT @rampage55: How far away is Sinder from a return and how soon will Brett W be up
A- Snider currently rehabbing in GCL. Next: A & AA stints before Jays. Post All-Star break return. Wallace? I'd wager on Sept callup.
Q- RT @footejb: Are Frasor, Camp and/or Downs still with the team after July 31st?
A- Jays want prospects. Wont give away for scraps. I'd say 2 of Frasor/Downs/Camp are still with the team post Trade Deadline.
Q- RT @AlanSimpson: @MLBastian Thoughts on the Fasano rumors?
A- As a reporter, having Sal as manager would be fantastic. Right now, tho, know that Anthopoulos' list of candidates is quite long.
Q- RT @500LevelFan: Any chance Romero picks up a few Cy Young votes?
A- How about the Jays offense offers him some more run support first. Way too early to talk CY votes in my opinion.

My question didn't get any ink.  You guys got any thoughts on it?

Game 51 Recap: That's two in a row! For us...

Good afternoon fellow Jays fans! A beautiful day, a tad too hot for this guy so I decided to enjoy my couch and watch a Jays game.

Nothing too exciting today and it was over quickly, Ricky must have had somewhere to be this afternoon.

Let's get to the good stuff:

Lewis continues to impress, first pitch the Jays saw today went to left and Freddy started the day off with a double. Almost looked like he wasn't going to make it home until Wells drove him in with his own double.

The Jays scored 3 in the first frame and none of those runs came in off a home run. That was a nice change, I get worried that all these bombs will dry up and we won't be able to score. A worry hitting coach Dwayne Murphy doesn't seem to have. See the bad section later.

It was nice to catch a game without Buck mis-pronouncing players names. But there is a bad side to that coin. Again see the bad section later on.

Looks like the seven spot is suiting Lyle just fine, hit his 3rd homer in 2 days. Glad to see him come around and start doing, well anything. The Angels are now looking for a first basemen after some seriously bad luck yesterday.

Ricky pitched well, only walked 2 and struck out 7 earning the fans some free pizza and doing it all on only 102 pitches for his second complete game of the year. Amazing the difference when he isn't pitching in front of his family. Just looked at his stats and this one looked like a done deal from the start, day games, on turf and at home he's been solid with an era well under 2.

Sam Cosentino started to talk about Ohman's scoreless streak and one pitch into his day J-Bau launches one. Then the wonderful announcer starts again and BOOM Gonzo lifts one out. 6th time this season the Jays have gone for back to back jacks.

The three homers today lifts the May total to 53 and the record for a month is 58. We've got Garza tomorrow night, so it's not looking like we're breaking the record.

Speaking of records, J-Bau has tied the Jays monthly homerun record with 12. That ties him with Cruz Jr and Delgado. This record has a chance to be broken since Jose has been going nuts this month.

Like I hoped, the Jays completed the sweep.

Now on the bad:

Dwayne Murphy was interviewed before the game and was asked about the low average's and on-base percentage and basically came out and said that they are over-rated and outdated stats and that they don't tell the entire story. Then asked about all the homers and said, the homers are nice, it just means we're scoring. Wow, cheerful guy. Not sure what would excite this guy.

Like I said earlier, Buck wasn't in today. But that gives us Sammy C and holy crap this guy is even worse. No show of emotion at all, hello Mr Monotone.

Ricky's first inning balk was just a sign of things to come, but with a better result a few innings later when he picked off Patterson trying to steal.

John Buck came up in the first and the third with runners on and both times did nothing, one strikeout and one pop up. His bat seems to have cooled a wee bit.

Gonzo made a couple of strange errors today. The first one was a ball that E5 should have had and Gonzo almost seemed surprised that it got to him and made a brutal throw that missed the bad by 15 feet. Then later he was attempting to make a Tony Fernandez type throw and it just dropped out of his hand. For a guy that was praised for his defense he's seems to have made more then a few errors so far this season. Although he prolly gets to more balls then most giving him more chance at an error. Ya, let's go with that.

That's all I've got, like I said it was a fairly quiet game.

A couple of things from Halladay's perfect game:

Apparently the Florida Marlins in a very classy move have given Roy the rubber from the mound.
Roy was back at the stadium at 8:45 this morning working out and someone said, you couldn't sleep in after throwing a perfect game yesterday? Classic Roy response, "I can sleep in during the winter".

Looking ahead:

Tomorrow the first place Rays come to town.  I wonder how many of their criminals will be "detained" at the airport?

Garza (5-3) Vs. Morrow (3-4) with a 7:07 start.

88 Lance Broadway RHP

20 Dan Rohn Manager
17 Dave LaRoche Pitching Coach
36 Chad Mottola Hitting Coach

* indicates player is currently on 40 man roster

Analysis:

These are the players that will most likely be called up in the event of an injury or a trade at the Major League level.  I noted the guys who are on the 40 man roster for a simple reason, they will be the first ones called up.  The other players would have to be added to the 40 man prior to be summoned to the majors.  Subsequently, someone else would have to be removed from the 40 man, most likely via trade, or be placed on the 60 day DL before that could happen.  It's a lot easier for the organization to just call up a guy who is already on the 40 man then deal with the headache.

Look at all that lefthanded pitching!

8 southpaws and 5 righties.  By my count we only have 4 guys in the rotation unless Purcey is allowed to start.  Keep in mind LHP Marc Rzepczynski (15 day), RHP Jesse Litsch (60 day), RHP Scott Richmond (60 day), RHP Dustin McGowan (15 day), RHP Dirk Hayhurst (60 day) and RHP Shawn Hill (minor leagues) are listed as disabled.  These guys are on various timetables in terms of recovery.  Hopefully they will be added to this list whenever they have completed their respective 30 day "rehab assignment".

First call ups for starting pitchers in order are:
  1. Brett Cecil
  2. Brad Mills
  3. Robert Ray
  4. Ray Gonzalez
Relievers really depend on what the big club needs.  But since we only have one lefty, Scotty Downs, in the bullpen right now, I figure the call ups will look something like this:
  1. Carlson
  2. Roenicke
  3. Purcey
Contrary to popular belief, I do not think Brett Wallace will be up with the big club until the rosters are opened up in September, even if/when we trade Lyle Overbay.  Boy Wonder will be very weary of his service time and not want to "start his clock" until he absolutely has to.

I see Brian Dopriak going up whenever the impending Overbay deal finally does happen.  He will be given an opportunity to hit major league pitching.  Unfortunately for him, regardless of the results, he more than likely eventually gets outrighted off the 40 man roster in favour of a pitcher at some point this season.

Jarrett Hoffpauir will also probably see some time in the big leagues this year but I wouldn't run out and buy his jersey just yet.....because if we need an outfielder, Jeremy Reed is the guy and he needs to be added to the 40 man before he can go up.  Raul Chavez and J.P. Arencibia are in the same boat with respect to the catching position.

Look for Hoffpauir to be the first guy outrighted off the 40 man when we eventually need that spot.  Another candidate, although much less likely is Luis Perez.  He is slated to begin the year in New Hampshire.  25 year old left handed pitchers do not tend to make it through waivers.

Aside from Rommie Lewis, who opened some eyes in camp, the rest of the guys on this pitching staff are known as organizational depth and are expendable.  We got them from someone else and we will give them to someone else. But don't feel too bad for them, they still get paid decent money to play the game they love but need to catch a break to get to the bigs.

Boy Wonder is going to have some decisions to make when Litsch, Richmond and Hayhurst are ready to pitch due to their status.  I predict trades are going to start being considered in about three months time.  We will be looking for players coming back that do not need to be added to the 40 man roster right away.

Question:

How does anybody actually play baseball in Vegas with these types of distractions omnipresent.

Why aren't we going after Johnny Damon?

I keep reading that Johnny Damon is running out of options, it got me thinking, why aren’t we looking at Damon?

Sure we’ve got left field options, I’ve read that the Jays would prefer not to have both Lind and Snider in the field at the same time if possible. So put Lind in the DH spot and crush my dream of having Ruiz as our everyday DH. I can live with that if it means putting the best team on the field. Ideally I'd like to see the impending Overbay deal happen as I've said a few times now. But whatever, I'll live with him for one more year. We’ve got Bautista sure, but Damon’s stats are much better. Plus if Johnny comes to Toronto maybe he can grow his Jesus beard once again.

And as Golden Arm just pointed out, we've got a roster spot available. I'd like to see this happen.

Let's compare the two's stats:

Bautista’s 2009 stats.

.235 Avg, 56 BB, 4 SB, 13 HR’s, 40 RBI in 113 games.

Damon’s 2009 stats.

.282 Avg, 71 BB, 12 SB, 24 HR’s, 82 RBI in 143 games.

But in also seriousness, this gives the Jays a MUCH needed lead off man for our lineup since we are clearly missing that. Plus with all these kids on the team if gives us a little more veteran presence and from a team that just won it all. Give him a 3-4 million dollar deal plus incentives. It's a win win for everyone involved. Damon’s running out of options and apparently even considered retirement at one point. Maybe next year he’ll have some better luck getting to a team that has a playoff chance. But at this point Mr. Damon, what other options do you have?

Weekly Round Up : Jan. 18 - 24

Business as usual for Boy Wonder.  He is still looking to catch lightning in a bottle.  Former elite closer Eric Gagne is on the radar.  Gagne, 34, has been pitching for the Quebec Capitales of the independent Can-Am league.  He made 17 starts, threw about a hundred innings and posted a 4.65 ERA.  Considering our bullpen is looking pretty crowded already, I'm not sure if this is going to happen.  At this point in his career, Gagne may be better suited for the NL.

Early in the week we heard reports (again) that Carlos Delgado was a target.  This time around according to MLB.com's Noah Coslov, we had signed him.  This rumor was quickly shot down by the brain trust but there is no doubt that we have interest.  I'm going to tear my beating heart out of my chest for a minute and go on record as saying this make no sense for us considering our current roster.  A trade here (impending Overbay deal) and a tweak there, maybe, but right now.....no match.

Another minor league signing wrapped up the week.  Shawn Hill, a former Georgetown Eagle standout, was inked.  He was born in Mississauga and grew up in nearby Georgetown.  I received a call from insider Jimmy Triggs early on Friday morning with the news.  I legitimately could have broken this story a solid hour before the news became public but work shifts and was fast asleep.  You see Shawn's cousin is a friend of the site and we hope to have more for you on this Canadian boy coming home story in the future.  He has dealt with various arm injuries in the past and is coming off his second Tommy John surgery.  Shawn, 28, was able to pitch through the pain of a completely torn ulnar collateral ligament in the semi finals of the 2004 Olympics against eventual gold medal winner Cuba.  He held them to 2 runs through 6 innings and was in line for the win until a bullpen meltdown cost us the victory.

"I had just kind of gotten used to it, whether it was a good thing, bad thing, or just something stupid," Hill said Friday from Viera, Fla., after signing a minor-league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. "Going through it, you're just thankful you can pitch through all that. Obviously it hurt my effectiveness at times and my numbers ended up being skewed by a couple of bad starts each year right before I got shut down when it got to be too much.  At the time you're thinking it's a good thing, but now looking back at it, I wonder if I couldn't have taken it, if they had to just shut me down and done it then, it might have been beneficial long-term."

The spin courtesy of Boy Wonder:

"We're probably going to be a little more conservative about (Hill's return)," said Anthopoulos, adding that the team will institute a new soft rule of waiting 12 months post Tommy John surgery before allowing pitchers to return. "This is about getting another talented young starter into the organization for more than just 2010."

I'm rooting for a Chris Carpenter type ending to this story.

File this tidbit of news under the no shit category.  Apparently we have outfield spots up for grabs with the 21 million dollar man being the only lock to make the opening day roster.  Ah, yeah. I hope so.

AAAA

Hey Mom, look what I found.....

I heard whisperings that Randy Ruiz had been playing a little outfield in the winter leagues.  I had already looked into his hitting and was pleasantly surprised.  He should arrive at camp next month in mid season form.  But the thought of him playing defense got my mind racing.  I had to see it for myself and was able to track down this boxscore.

From it I can make a few observations:
  • Randy Ruiz started in left field and hit clean up.
  • Huge day at the plate and was no doubt seeing the ball well.
  • Clutched up with a big three run shot with two out.
  • Charged with an error in the field, his SEVENTH in the 26 game season.  There is no way to tell how many of those games he was the DH.
  • Was replaced defensively most likely in last inning.
  • Guy who replaced him also made an error in left so there is hope that maybe the lights were low or something.  ;)
  • The pitchers for the other team did not have a very good day.
Now I'm not going to sit here, blow smoke up your ass and say that he should play the field for us at the Major League level.  I have never seen him play in the outfield but based on his body type (6'1 / 240ish) and after seeing his graceful pictures above (his eyes are actually closed) and below, I have to assume it doesn't look pretty.  According to The Baseball Cube: In his ten years of professional ball he has played 435 games at 1st and 62 in the outfield.  He had only one start at the one bag for us last season.  Officially he is listed on the 40 man roster as a DH.

We all know what he can do with the stick:

Courtesy of The Mockingbird

From a truly amazing, must see website Hit Tracker.  Video of his 435 foot no doubter off Pettitte can be found here.  If he just got the elevation angle of the ball up a couple of degrees, this bomb easily would have been 450 feet plus.  He had a total of 10 home runs and 7 doubles in 115 at bats as well as a .385 on base percentage with the big club in 2009.

Analysis:

The Cito said late last season that he doesn't want Lind in LF when Snyder is in RF.  When asked this off season who his lead off guy would be, he said Bautista.  Unfortunately for The Human Rain Delay, Overbay is still employed and will play a lot (read not platoon) if we are trying to showcase him for a trade and/or beef up his Elias free agent ranking.

We have only 4 bench spots and you have to know that Johnny Mac and the back up catcher get two of them.  For the third spot we would need a 4th outfielder.  That only leaves one spot available.  I guess what I'm trying to say is if the season started tomorrow, Randy would be hard pressed to crack the 25 man active roster and would basically be auditioning for that final spot.  But if he can market himself as anything other than just a DH this spring, his chances go up substantially.

Jesus.....

Personally, I would like him get around 500 at bats only to see what he can really do.  The problem is I don't know who you take those at bats away from in order to give him the opportunity.
