26 Man Roster Challenge: 2023 Edition

The Roster Challenge is off and running for this season! Thanks to all who took the time to join us.

We have to start by apologizing for the lateness of this post. We had a vacation booked and MLB did not bother to check with us first before setting the camp start dates. The nerve.

Seems as though the interest in the challenge may be waning a little bit, and that’s okay. Perhaps it has run its course, but we still enjoy trying to predict the opening day roster and are glad there are others who feel the same way.

This year we received 10 ballots containing 32 total names picked. That is a somewhat shockingly high number, considering we are not rebuilding and the MLB roster is pretty much set.

On those ballots, the following 20 names were included on each of them:

Bass

Bassitt

Berrios

Bichette

Biggio

Chapman

Cimber

Espinal

Garcia

Gausman

Guerrero

Jansen

Kiermaier

Kikuchi

Kirk

Manoah

Mayza

Merrifeld

Romano

Varsho

A solid core to be sure, but we thought this number might have been even higher, say 22-23. Riveting stuff!

The following teams picked an identical ballot, so the tiebreaker will come into play: Team Ant Farm (16-15), Team Gregor (no tiebreaker) and Team I Like Nuts (16-16)

There was a different identical ballot picked by two other teams, which in retrospect was a ballsy move because they included the name Robbie Grossman, who has since signed a deal with the Rangers. So, ya, A Serious Team and Team @1BJW are not looking so smart now. We both just thought there was no way your Toronto Blue Jays would roll into the season without a decent 4th OF who could be a replacement-level type guy for a couple of weeks, but it looks like the team just may do that. There will be opportunities later in camp or in season to address this issue, but Grossman seemed like a great fit.

The below names can only be found on a single ballot, which qualifies them as the long shots. Keep an eye on Zulueta, Pearson and Bernard because, if they do crack the roster, glory will surely follow.

Shout out to friend of the site The Blue Jay Hunter for also taking a chance and not picking George Springer. History could show this is a good bet.

An honourable mention goes to Team Last Row 500’s for not buying that new guy Belt is going to make the squad. Not sure if this was an oversight, or if perhaps he has some intel on the DH’s troublesome knee(s) that he is keeping close to the vest.

Challenge Update!

MLB has decided to go with 26-man rosters this season, so I guess we have to as well. I mean, why not up the degree of difficulty? It's not like anyone in the 10 years we've been running this bad boy has nailed the perfect ballot anyways.

Apparently there will be a cap on the number of pitchers that teams are allowed to carry, but, as far as we can tell, there has been nothing official from MLB yet. Hopefully they get around to doing that before the deadline to submit ballots, which is February 12th @ 11:59PM EST, but we kinda want them not to, just to see the chaos that would create for this challenge.

For those that don’t know, The 26-Man Roster Challenge is a super simple game that has but one requirement: Name the 26 baseball players within the Blue Jays organization who will crack the opening day roster.

Sounds easy, right? Well, it really isn’t. If you decide to play, there are 4 ways to submit your ballot:
  1. Send us an email: 1bluejaysway(at)gmail.com
  2. Make a post on your blog, if you have one, and send us a link.
  3. Add your ballot to the comments section of this post, or the reminder(s) we post later.
  4. Twitter ballots will be accepted @1BJW
In the event of a tie—and, at this point, it's pretty much a given that there will be a tie—we ask that you also give us a prediction of what you think the spring training record will be for the boys in baby blue. From what we can see, it appears as though your Toronto Blue Jays will attempt to play 33 spring training games this year. That total includes the two exhibition games against the Skankees at the Big O, but not the split-squad game against the Canadian Junior National Team on March 12.

Try not to forget that sometimes it rains in Florida, and the games don't generally get made up if they are cancelled. There is also a chance that if a game goes to extra innings and one team runs out of pitchers, both teams agree that the game ends in a tie.

It is not a requirement that you select a tie breaker—all ballots containing 26 names on it will be considered valid—but it is a very good idea that you do include one. Over the years, we have had numerous stupid-close finishes, and we actually had to break it right down to winning percentage. We have only had one outright winner in 10 years.

Some things to consider:

Anthony Alford, Anthony Bass and Breyvic Valera are all out of options and need to head north with the team or risk being lost on waivers. Bass is likely a lock for the bullpen because it appears as though the brain trust forgot about it this off-season. There are plenty of replacement-level guys still available on the market, so selecting a player for your ballot that currently isn’t in the organization is a viable strategy.

Also, isn’t this extra player slot perfect for Alford? Fifth OF type who can play D and run like a scared dear. Just spitballing. Scott Mitchell at TSN did a piece on this topic, as did Keegan Matheson, (sort of) over at MLB if you want to see some early insider takes.

As always, the dreaded minor-league-deal-with-an-invite-to-spring-training needs to be mentioned and considered. A.J. Cole and Ryan Dull probably have a shot at the bullpen, but the rest are pretty yuck.

Prizes:

Good luck to all who decide to join in on the fun this year. Please include a team name and a tiebreaker. Do NOT forget the tiebreaker.

10th Annual 25 Man Roster Challenge

When we think back to how this thing began, and then to what it has come to be now, we are quite proud. In the first year of this blog, we were scrambling every damn day to post something about our beloved Toronto Blue Jays. It totally sucked. But out of desperation comes the occasional hint of brilliance, and the 25 Man Roster Challenge was born. In it's early form, only the four contributors to the site were invited to submit a ballot, and they each had to do an individual post on their ballot. Content is king, baby!

Who can forget the 2013 edition and it's stupid close finish? I mean, 0.001% close. From that challenge the modified tiebreaker was adopted as the gold standard, and it's still in use today.

In the 5th annual challenge, a writer who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown tossed in a ballot and we got the feeling this thing had begun to have some reach.

How about the Jay Bruce gong show? I mean, Kenny dropped a bombshell with just over two hours until the deadline. Literally ten minutes after the deadline, the rumour was shot down and the deal was dead.

But enough reminiscing. Onto the fast facts about this year's 25 Man Roster Challenge:

  • 25 ballots were submitted prior to the deadline
  • Only 11 names appear on every ballot
  • A record 46 different players were picked
  • 10 names appear on only 1 ballot
  • Vlad was picked on multiple ballots

MOST IMPORTANTLY: We believe we have actually found a way to roll out this monster challenge in an efficient way.

This is a list of the players that all contestants selected to make the opening day roster:

Ryan Borucki (nobody is buying the "(he) will be competing for the fifth spot" nonsense)
New guy Galvis
100 miles Giles
Grich
Gurriel Jr
Jansen
Mayza (really?)
Morales
Smoaky
Stro
Tepera

Here is a list of the players that only one single contestant selected to make the roster:

Danny Barnes
Neftali Feliz
Gio Gonzalez
Javy Guerra
Dan Jennings
Reese McGuire
Ervin Santana
Dwight Smith Jr
Eric Sogard
Nick Vincent

That's completely rando. We love it! Unfortunately, one guy has already signed with somebody else. It might be over before it has even begun.....

And, finally, the teams and tiebreakers, which is a guess of what the spring training record will end at in late March. Click on the link above to see the full ballots if you're interested.

Update: The 25 Man Roster Challenge

We've been scouring the internet for the last few weeks and gathered some notes from the Blue Jays camp. Today we wanted to pass along some good and not so good news to teams competing in The 25 Man Roster Challenge.

Of the 18 ballots submitted, 10 went with LHP Aaron Loup. So far that looks like a very nice call. Gibby and by extension all MLB managers like to have multiple lefties available to them. Don't buy it?

Prepare to get Wilnerized.....

And then this appeared about a week later from a much more tolerable source. To sum up, those 10 ballots are looking pretty slick.

5 of the ballots submitted thought lightning could strike twice. Well, it won't with respect to Rule V pick 2017 The Sparkman. Gotta feel for the guy, his rehab will be stupid long. I'm sure he would rather just get back on a mound and pitch, service time be damned.

For those that actually give a fuck what Wilner thinks, he's been doing a weekly series on who he thinks will head north with the team. You can find his latest thoughts here. In fairness, he's a pretty swell writer.

That's about it for now. All you that took the under on the tiebreaker are looking pretty good. Your Toronto Blue Jays spring training record sits at a dick softening 6 - 14 - 2.

Update: 25 Man Roster Challenge

We have been dreading this update post for a week now. You can be sure that by the time it's up, something will have changed. It's been a wild and crazy spring training for your Toronto Blue Jays and, in turn, it's been a wild and crazy 25 Man Roster Challenge.

It's wide open.

There are a few teams that took a chance on a bullpen arm and they've been burned already.

Just Say No To Thole was the only ballot with the name Ryan Tepera on it.

Team Do I Get Extra Points For Submitting A Month Early was the only ballot with the name Matt West on it.

According to this report, LHP Rob Rasmussen was optioned to AAA Buffalo. That's bad news for the three teams that took him.

Norris' Buehrle Beard
Like a Candle without Lind
The Orlando Merceds

Marcus Stroman is out for the year. Keep this in mind, all ballots contained his and the following names:

Brett Cecil
Edwin Encarnacion
Maicer Izturis
Michael Saunders

Saunders is extremely doubtful for opening day; Izturis recently pulled his groin; Cecil just started throwing off a mound; Encarnacion hasn't swung a bat in a while. None of these guys are a slam dunk to open the year on schedule which could make for an interesting finish to this year's edition of the 25 Man Roster Challenge.

2015-02-25

And They're Off

This challenge has become a labour of love over time. It is rather time-consuming, yet it offers many rewards. At the forefront is that this contest gives us all some interesting insight into what the team's hardcore fan is thinking or feeling as spring training opens. It also gives us all a reason to watch those position battles in camp just a little closer than usual.

Some years the ballots we receive are quite predictable, which makes writing this post rather simple. This is not one of those years. What we like to do is point out a few interesting facts about the challenge itself and then end with the ballots. Apologies in advance for the length of this post, there really isn't a good way to roll this out.

This year, 24 competitors answered the call to the 6th annual 25-Man Roster Challenge. All 24 selected the following 14 names on their respective ballots:

Jose Bautista
Mark Buerhle
Brett Cecil
R.A. Dickey
Josh Donaldson
Edwin Encarnacion
Drew Hutchison
Maicer Izturis
Aaron Loup
Russell Martin
Jose Reyes
Aaron Sanchez
Michael Saunders
Marcus Stroman

A fine group indeed. If anyone from this list, for whatever reason, doesn't make the Opening Day roster for your Toronto Blue Jays, all bets are off. A ballot that may look silly or far-fetched now could end up being the winner if one or more of these 14 players doesn't come north with the team.

The following names were found on 23 of the 24 ballots:

Marco Estrada
Kevin Pillar
Dalton Pompey
Todd Redmond
Justin Smoak

Upon first glance, it is possible that all these players, save maybe Estrada, do not make the roster. Perhaps the owner of the ballot that didn't select them thought injury was a risk. Maybe, in the case of Pillar, the thinking is a non-roster, veteran type guy is more well-suited for the fourth OF roll. With respect to Pompey, he might not be ready to just be handed the keys to the everyday CF job. Redmond has proven to be a decent bullpen arm in the past, but there are other players in camp with better stuff, and he might slip through waivers at the end of the spring. Smoak isn't a lock to make the club by any stretch. It is also possible that they were just oversights--caught up in the numbers game, so to speak.

The following names were only present on a single ballot:

Scott Barnes
Ezequiel Carrera
Chris Dickerson
Liam Hendriks
Rafael Soriano
Ryan Tepera
Devon Travis
Matt West

These players just have to be considered a lottery ticket. A long shot, no doubt, to make the big club. Sometimes in life you have to take chances in order to receive glory. On the ballots we will put these players names in bold so that they stick out like the sore thumb they rightfully are.

We do have to mention that nobody took this guy, and it makes us kinda sad.

But we guess there are a whole bunch of pretty good reasons for that.

Fast facts!
  • Three ballots went with the unorthodox three-catcher system;
  • The battle for back-up infielder appears to be Ryan Goins, 13 votes vs Steve Tolleson, 10 votes;
  • Daniel Norris and his surgically repaired pitching elbow got 17 votes;
  • Dioner "trade me the fuck outta here any time now" Navarro got 21 votes; and
  • Only two ballots picked the same 25 players, which is kinda awesome if you think about it.
On with the ballots already. Since they all contained the same 14 names mentioned above, we will just show you the team name, tiebreaker (which was the predicted spring training record for the Blue Jays) and the other 11 players needed to round out the 25-man roster limit.

Update: 12 Man Pitching Staff Battle Royal

They are flying over the ropes fast and furious now.  Gone are Marc Rzepczynski, David Purcey and Jesse Carlson which leaves 14 arms vying for 12 spots.

Rotation Candidates:
Shaun Marcum
Ricky Romero
Brandon Morrow
Brian Tallet
Dana Eveland
Brett Cecil

Bullpen Candidates:
Jason Frasor
Scott Downs
Kevin Gregg
Shawn Camp
Jeremy Accardo
Casey Janssen
Josh Roenicke
Merkin Valdez

Analysis:

The injury to Rzep couldn't have come at a worse time.  A day after sending down two lefty relievers, the club may have to recall one of them.  Unless of course they choose to start the year with either Eveland or Tallet in the bullpen.  But they will need a second lefty down there to help Downs out.

Another issue to consider is Brandon Morrow.  He remains a little behind the other starters in terms of innings pitched this spring due to the fact he was shut down with right shoulder tightness.  He may need a few more innings pitched before he is ready to join the rotation.

Brian Tallet is going to get the start today against the Evil Empire at 1:05 in Dunedin.  His role will be determined after the game so I assume he will be pitching his heart out.  The results of the game will dictate where he begins the year, in either the bullpen or rotation.  Tough break for him drawing the powerhouse Yanks with so much on the line.

Right now, this is a tough one to call.  We need to cut two more pitchers from the list above.  Who do you think they will be?

Weekly Round Up : Mar. 22 - 28

Please consider this your required reading for the week.

Courtesy of King Bastian:

JAYS TRIM ROSTER: Early on Sunday morning, the Blue Jays parted ways with Joey Gathright, releasing the veteran outfielder. Gathright was hitting .167 this spring and said on Saturday that he was willing to accept a Minor League assignment.
"You kind of expect something bad to happen, but not this," Gathright said "But, I can understand where the team is coming from. I had a very, very bad spring hitting wise. You've got to do what you've got to do. A lot of guys are having good springs, so you've got to give those guys opportunity."
Anthopoulos said it did not seem fair to Gathright to send him to Triple-A, considering a few other outfielders had passed him on the organizational depth chart. The GM said Gathright would've been fourth or fifth in line for a potential promotion. Beyond Gathright and Emaus, the Jays also reassigned outfielder Chris Lubanski to Minor League camp.
The Jays now have 33 players remaining in camp. Eight cuts to go.

There are only three days left to get your vote in for the first ever 25 Man Roster Challenge.  You can find our picks in the right hand margin at the top.  I think it's fair to say that none of us saw this one coming as we all had Gathright on our lists.....

Courtesy of Ken Rosenthal @ FOX Sports:

One way or another, the Jays will turn Frasor and Downs into younger pieces as they continue rebuilding. The team’s look is changing rapidly; by this time next season, Brett Wallace could be at first base, Adeinis Hechevarria at shortstop, J.P. Arencibia at catcher.
Wallace was part of the four-team Roy Halladay trade. Hechevarria is a highly regarded Cuban defector. Arencibia, the team’s first-round pick in 2007, is coming off a big spring.
The idea is to keep adding quality young parts. The Jays, if they trade Frasor and Downs, will not settle for fringe prospects in return.

Kenny getting paid to state the obvious.  Jason Frasor was named the closer this week.  Got him for a buck in my AL only fantasy league and just picked him up off the waiver wire in a mixed roto league!  Hope he gets Team BALCO a few saves before he is traded.

Courtesy of Fan Graphs:

Shawn Camp has picked up a change-up to go with his fastball and slider combination. Camp did more than pick the pitch up; he threw it over 30% of the time in 2009. That story is eerily similar to Brandon League’s 2009. Although unlike League, Camp’s fastball doesn’t touch 94 MPH in a hurricane. Instead it sits around 88, and Camp relies on mixing speeds more than the baker man. Camp actually worked in higher leveraged situations on average than League did last season while missing a career high percentage of bats. What makes Camp intriguing besides his (presumably) lower trade return and modest salary just over a million dollars? He’s a groundball machine (56% career) and devours righties (career 3.05 K/BB ratio against them). Any pitcher who can survive in the American League East is worthy of a look-see, and a transition into the American or National League Central would almost certainly improve his numbers, albeit on a marginal level.

Shawn Camp is in a key figure in the 12 Man Pitching Staff Battle Royal.  My view is he gets a job in the bullpen for a few reasons:
  • He is out of options
  • The Cito has confidence in him to get right handed hitters out
  • His ability to throw more than one inning effectively
Courtesy of The Detroit News:

Casey Fien said. "This game can be cruel sometimes. Nobody gave me any answers. I asked the Jays why and they told me I was a liability.  A liability? I haven't thrown to a hitter all spring. It's been like a twilight zone, a nightmare. Nobody gave me a chance. That's the first time I'd ever thought of quitting baseball."
Interesting quote.  Wonder who said it to him?

Courtesy of Deadspin:

2. His real name is Clarence Gaston, and it's actually how the name appears on his early baseball cards. He took the name "Cito" because he was a fan of a lucha libre wrestler with that name while growing up in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Our lame duck field manager took the name of a fucking Mexican wrestler?  Wow.  Just wow.  Nice to see fellow Blue Jays blogger Ghost Runner on First getting a shout out at the bottom of this post.  Drew and the boys are rock solid.

Courtesy of Bob Elliot @ Toronto Sun:

Roy Halladay could always draw a crowd. Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies are scheduled to be at the Rogers Centre for a three-game series June 25-27, but Major League Baseball is looking at re-arranging the schedule — a day-night doubleheader perhaps — according to industry sources.
It’s not that Halladay will bring a legion of fans to the Rogers Centre as the Jays plan to honour him, but rather a conflict with the annual G-20 Summit set for the same weekend.
While the summit attracts presidents and prime ministers from around the world, it also attracts protestors and heightened security. The nearby (Metro) Toronto Convention Centre is hosting the event.
The teams could play a day-night doubleheader on Saturday and allow the Phillies to leave early, or the three-game series and the one before it could be pushed ahead a day.
The St. Louis Cardinals, who visit Toronto on June 22-24, and the Cleveland Indians, who are in Philadelphia the same dates, could play a day early. All four clubs have June 21 off.

The much anticipated weekend series is entering full blown clusterfuck status.  As mentioned in the weekly round up two weeks ago, we got a double dip coming our way!  I have ordered tickets for all three games and can't wait to see how this thing is going to work itself out.  I spoke to an old colleague, who works in the MTCC, and he informed me that the G20 will be taking place in the south building.  The entrance to that building is off Bremner Blvd and the bulk of the meetings will take place 300 or so feet below ground level.

Update: 12 Man Pitching Staff Battle Royal

Your Toronto Blue Jays reassigned RHP Steven Register, LHP Willie Collazo and LHP Rommie Lewis to Minor League camp on Saturday.  That leaves 18 guys fighting for 12 jobs.  All of them are on the 40 man roster.  That means six more cuts and I think all the remaining guys can pitch in the big leagues and get people out.  Injuries may play a small role with McGowan shut down and Morrow missing a start.  This battle has major implications on the 25 Man Roster Challenge.

One of those jobs has been assured.  Today it was announced that the opening day starting pitcher on April 5 in Texas at Rangers Ballpark will be:

Shaun Marcum!

It makes the most sense and I agree with the choice based on the candidates.  That being said, you have to think he is in the bottom half in the AL in terms of quality.  He will line up to pitch against guys like:

CC
Josh Beckett
Justin Verlander
Zach Grienke
Mark Buehrle
Jered Weaver
King Felix
Scott Feldman
James Shields
Kevin Millwood
Ben Sheets
Jake Westbrook
Scott Baker

Could make for a long losing streak or two this season.  I officially ban the terms Ace and Marcum from ever being uttered in the same sentence on this site.  I do not recognize him as such.

Thanks to Jordan Bastian for this:

CAREER MAJOR LEAGUE STARTS

Noted.  Now sit down at the end of the bench and shut the fuck up.

I found another quote that is a tad bit more interesting to me.

"The way Ricky threw the ball last year, I thought he deserved an opportunity but [general manager] Alex [Anthopoulos] chose me," Marcum said.

The GM making the decisions around here and not the coach....?  I like it.  There is some hope.

Quickly:

Take a look at the names on this list of opening day starters.  Doc for the last 7 years on the pitching side.  We were 4 and 3 in those games.

Truly some great names!  Did you know that TV color-man Rance Mulliniks has started at third base more than anybody?

And Then There Were 44.....

1B/DH Brian Dopirak, INF Jarrett Hoffpauir and RHP Ray Gonzalez have been optioned to AAA Las Vegas.
RHP Lance Broadway AKA Team Enforcer and LHP Zach Jackson, along with catcher Kyle Phillips, were sent back to Minor League camp.
LHP Sean Henn was outrighted to AAA after passing through waivers unclaimed.
RHP Casey Fien was released.  He had a shorter tenure with your Toronto Blue Jays than Brian Bocock.  I think there may be a bit more to this story than advertised because he had an option year left.
We also returned Rule 5 pick RHP Zech Zinicola to the Washington Nationals which officially fucks me on the 25 Man Roster Challenge.  I can still win it but I am the first contestant to lose a player off their list.  Not good.

I should have never picked a guy who wears pink.

As Opening Day approaches, there is less talk about "taking the best team north" and a lot more talk about options.  If you need a refresher on how it all works, click here.

Merkin Valdez, Shawn Camp and Dana Eveland are out of options.  These players are on the bubble and they have an advantage.

Boy Wonder explains:

"So part of this is controlling as many players as you can and trying to keep your depth. They understand that guys that don't have options tend to get the benefit of the doubt a little bit more or tend to stick around a little bit longer, because we don't want to take the chance that we might lose some of those players. Sometimes you make the decision that you can't carry him, like a guy like Zinicola, for example. We like the arm, but just with the guys we have, they're just much further along than him right now, so we had to make a decision."

Relievers with player options left are Jeremy Accardo, Josh Roenicke, Casey Janssen, Jesse Carlson and David Purcey.  Look for only one of these guys to get a spot on Opening Day.  My money is on Carlson.  Cito abuses Jesse.  Just the thought of not being able to go to him every second day must be making the managers head spin.  He is battling a knee injury and may not be ready to pitch April 4th.  At least it is not an elbow or shoulder problem.

I am still not convinced that Rzepczynski gets a spot in the rotation.  If he doesn't make the team, than Eveland slides into the rotation and creates another vacancy in the bullpen.

Lost in all these subtractions is the news that some players are actually being added to the Major League camp.  None of them are probably being seriously considered for jobs at this point but the one name I am uber excited for is: OF Darin Mastroianni.  He is 24 yrs old, 5′11″ 190 lbs and was drafted in the 16th round of the 2007 draft.  A legit defensive centrefielder, he has blinding speed and a knack for getting on base.  All the tools needed to be a lead off hitter right there.

I thought that the gesture of bringing Darin Mastroianni in was absolutely great. Here’s a guy who stole 70 bases at 2 levels last year and who could be the perfect 4th outfielder the Jays have been looking for. He had an OBP of .398 last year and has a lot more potential than Joey Gathright. The Jays probably wanted to take a peak at him to realize what they have in the minors. He should be in AAA, in my opinion, and waiting to grab a spot when one becomes available. I really like the fact that they brought him in for a quick look though, great stuff that should motivate him in 2010.
