What. A. Game.
I had to wait a while to report on the game due to various reasons, mostly pre and post game festivities related. Hot Rod, The Raezor, Jimmy Botts, Jimmy Triggs and yours truly met up for a guaranteed shitshow. The Raezor is in town for the weekend from Calgary and he wanted to see a game. He mentioned to me that this would probably be his only game in the SkyDome this year and he wanted to do it up right.....
There was some serious heckling going on and we got to A's clean up hitter Kevin Kouzmanoff. At one point I turned to the people in my section and encouraged them to "yell at somebody" To my surprise, most of them actually did.
Right at the end of the video you can see Buck's eyes look up quickly.....guarantee that was us.
During the post game interview of new hero John Buck, Hot Rod and I went down with the intent of yelling at Sam Cosentino. At one point I was letting John know that I wanted to have his children and green coat security guy took note and made a threatening motion at me. I laughed at him. He called the cops. Me and Hot Rod bounced. Cops were waiting. I recall the conversation well.
Officer: Sir you have been asked to leave.
Golden Arm: I will do just that.
Officer: Take a BIG sip of your beer and come with me.
Golden Arm (looking down at a half full beer): Yes sir.
As we got about half way to the door.
Golden Arm: Would be ok to take another sip?
Officer: Pound it. Hurry up we gotta make this look good.
I shook his hand as I exited the SkyDome. Good times.
As you can probably guess, I had to watch the greatest invention in modern day history, the mighty PVR, to fill in the details.
Jays win 6 - 3.
Ricky stops the losing streak at 5.
Gregg got his 6th save striking out the side.
Justin DL Duchscherer limped off the mound in the fourth inning. Glad I dropped him in my keeper league.
John Buck and Travis Snider hit back to back jacks in the third. Both were no doubters.
Buck got a rare three happy cats for his efforts.
He hit two fastballs and a curve over the wall for 3 home runs.
His last of the three bombs went off Windows in center.
He became the 15th Toronto Blue Jay in team history to accomplish that feat.
He had five of the six RBI for the game.
I will send it over to King Jordan to describe the situation when he stepped up in his forth and final at bat in the 8th.
Courtesy of King Jordan:
TORONTO -- As John Buck approached the plate in the eighth inning
of Thursday's game against the A's, he could barely hear himself think.
The crowd on hand at Rogers Centre rose to its feat and joined
together in a chant of, "Buck! Buck! Buck!" Toronto's 6-3 win was close
to being in the books -- thanks to a solid effort from starter Ricky
Romero and Buck's heroics -- but that was not enough.
The fans were hoping to witness history -- a fourth home run in
a single game from one of Toronto's players -- and Buck tried to
deliver.
After falling into an 0-2 count against A's reliever Brad
Ziegler, the big catcher took one final monstrous hack, sending the
ball sky-high and eventually into the glove of Oakland right fielder
Ryan Sweeney for a routine out.
The history the author is referring to in another one of his rock solid pieces happened once before in the SkyDome. I remember it fondly. We all need to keep going to the game people. Cool shit happens.

Remembering: Roberto Alomar
Hearing his name for me personally, makes my mind wander back to the summer of 2008. I remember it was July 28th, a regular Monday night not unlike any other. My slopitch team, the Georgetown Goodtimers, were scheduled to play our weekly game at 7:00pm in a very small town named Hornby located just off Steeles Avenue between Milton and Georgetown. We always hated playing in this bandbox because the fences are short, the infield is never groomed and the light standards are low which makes picking up fly balls in the evening rather difficult.
I recall rolling into the parking lot and noticing a group of people loitering not far from the field. I got out of my car, grabbed my gear and started to walk towards the diamond. I glanced at the group of people in mid stride and thought to myself: hey, that guy right there looks a lot like Robbie Alomar. Realizing immediately how far fetched of an idea it was that Robbie fucking Alomar was at a t-ball diamond in Hornby, I dismissed the notion completely and figured it was just the pre game festivities talking. I continued my stroll to the bench and began preparing for the game.
As game time drew near, my teammates trickled in one by one. Each and everyone of them saying that some guy by the parking lot looks like the ten time gold glove winner. Then our leftfielder Mash arrived and he was adamant that it was in fact the great Robbie Alomar. Mash would routinely jog five kilometers one way to the games instead of drive, so his mind was no doubt clear.
As the game began, we didn't care. The questions were endless.....
Our shortstop and clean up hitter, Ike Zelek, was the first to gain the courage and went out to where he was. He returned with a big smile on his face, confirming our thoughts that it was the four time silver slugger. Jimmy Triggs, the team super utilityman/DH, by chance wore his Jays jersey to the game. He instructed some of the player's wives to head over there and get him to sign it with his classic phrase "Catch the taste".
I remember thinking to myself that I had nothing worthy to be autographed. I asked our team rep and equipment manager, The Clamp, for a unused game ball and he told me he may have one in his car. Lucky for me, he had one and I proceeded over to Robbie's group meekly with a red sharpie in hand. The 1992 ALCS MVP was very engaging and had no problem signing the ugly, yellow, flight restricted ball. I can remember my hand was trembling when I was passing him the ball and sharpie. I was starstruck, this guy was truly my hero growing up. I was completely unprepared to meet The Best Toronto Blue Jay to ever wear the uniform when I got up that morning. Collecting myself somewhat, I then mustered up the balls to ask him how he was enjoying his time in the lovely town of Hornby. This prompted a laugh from all, I shook his hand and thanked him for the memories.
Walking back to the diamond with my new treasure, I passed by Sammy in right field and begged him to let me keep it. He laughed loudly at me and agreed, no doubt seeing that I would have not taken no for an answer.

One final twist to this totally random story. As it turns out a guy named Rob Alomar number 97 is on the roster of a Men's C team, in the Georgetown Slopitch League. They played the 9 o'clock game that night. Don't believe me? Check for yourself here.
From this experience I learned one very important life lesson: Always have a new baseball on hand at all times.
For the record, I keep one still in the wrapper in my glove box and look forward to my next Blue Jay encounter.
Anyone out there have any chance meetings worth sharing?

How to: Heckle
Simply put: There is nothing better than heckling at a ball game with friends. Here is a step by step guide to assist you on your mission.
1) Do your research on the opposing team. It is very important to look up stats, pictures, and wikipedia information on the opposing team’s players. Find out where they are from. Find out what their hobbies are.
Example: Luke Scott made a stop in town last year. He is a bible thumper named after the patron saint Luke. I informed him that God's power stopped at the roof of the Dome, and He could not help him here.
2) Get drunk. Pre game festivities is a must. Since you will be drawing attention to yourself I do not advise "smuggling" in a bottle.
3) Bring an army. You will not be able to keep up the pace needed all game. Minimum of three willing and able bodies is suggested. After about six innings, the other hecklers at the game will find you. We are drawn to each other.
4) Sit close to the field. Spend the extra 25 bucks and get decent seats. Field level is a must. Second/Fifth deck is pointless. The SkyDome is quiet pretty much all game but it negates the need to complete step 5.
5) Clear out the section early. Nothing worse than trying to heckle over the head of a small kid. Let your intentions known to the parents and suggest a section change.
6) DON'T SWEAR. Difficult to do after completing step 2 but this and only this will get you ejected from the stadium.
7) Start with Mr. Umpire. Everybody hates the umpires. Get his first name. Anything close that doesn't go our way MUST be punished. Consider this your "go to" material for later.
Example: I was just giving it to the first base ump for a close call he made in the first inning. I kept it up all game. In the 8th there was a bang/bang play that he could have called either way. It went our way. He glanced over his shoulder at me a couple pitches later and gave me a look like: OK are we even?
8) Pick on the rookie. These guys are not ready for it yet. Start here as a beginner.
Example: Justin Ruggiano of TB was in left field as a late game defensive replacement a few seasons ago. He went to Texas A&M. "Aggies suck" was all it took.
9) Try to avoid the one guy on the field that can hurt you.
Example: I was in Dunedin for spring training. Jays vs. Yanks. I stood up and yelled at Jeter "Hey Mrs. Jeter get off the field and let the men play". He jacked the NEXT pitch on a line to right center for a home run. Not exactly the result I was looking for.
10) Don't get discouraged. These guys are pros. They make more money than you and I will ever see and will tune you out. Don't give up. Everyone has something.
Example: Manny was in town with the Red Suck a few years ago. Late in the game after his last at bat, a quick IPhone search revealed his childrens names. I proceeded to yell at him that "Lucas can't read". The 20 million dollar man actually acknowledged my existence with a disgusted look on his face.
These guys didn't read step 9.
