Five Lugnuts Named MWL All-Stars

Here are your 2010 Midwest League All-Stars (with probably more to come, once promotions and injuries affect the roster -- expect Steve Turnbull to be added to the team, for instance):

  • Mark Sobolewski will start at third.
  • A.J. Jimenez will start behind the plate.
  • Ryan Schimpf will be the reserve second baseman.
  • Chad Jenkins and Aaron Loup will be in the bullpen.

Lugnuts rout Dragons, 9-3, for 7th straight win

DAYTON, Ohio – The Lansing Lugnuts (24-14) knocked out 13 hits and used another quality start from Chad Jenkins to rout the Dayton Dragons (18-21), 9-3, on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field, the Lugnuts' seventh victory.
Ryan Schimpf set the tone three batters into the game, lacing his first home run since Opening Day -- also, coincidentally, at Fifth Third Field.
Every Lugnuts starter hit safely, with Ryan Goins, Brad McElroy, Balbino Fuenmayor, and Eric Eiland each notching a pair of base hits. In the process, shortstop Goins extended his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 15 games.
The offensive barrage came in support of the 22-year-old Jenkins (3-2), Toronto's 2009 first round pick, who struck out seven batters while allowing only a trio of sixth inning runs in seven strong frames.
The Lugnuts received scoreless work from their bullpen, with Dustin Antolin pitching the eighth and Aaron Loup handling the ninth inning.
Dayton starter Josh Ravin (2-3) suffered the loss, gashed for nine hits and seven runs (five earned) in 5 2/3 innings.
Lansing goes for a eighth straight win and a sweep of the host Dragons on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Nuts right-hander Ryan Tepera (3-1, 3.86) will oppose Dayton left-hander Justin Walker (1-4, 6.57).
The Lugnuts return home on May 21st to open a eight-game homestand. Tickets to all Lugnuts home games at Cooley Law School Stadium are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.

TinCaps hold off Lugnuts, 7-5

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps (15-15) scored seven unanswered runs and survived a last-ditch rally in the ninth inning to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (17-14), 7-5, in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.
Three quick TinCaps errors and a Ryan Schimpf two-run double had staked Lansing out to an early 4-0 advantage. Fort Wayne struck back with a run in the second, four in the fourth, and solo tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-4 lead to the ninth.
Held to just one hit since the second inning, the Lugnuts refused to go quietly against Fort Wayne closer Nick Schumacher. Leading off, Balbino Fuenmayor reached on a third error of the game by shortstop Jonathan Galvez. Oliver Dominguez singled to left and Ryan Schimpf supplied a one-out RBI single. After Ryan Goins was called out on strikes, Mark Sobolewski lined a single through the glove of first baseman Nate Freiman to load the bases and bring up clean-up hitter Brad Glenn.
Glenn worked the count to 2-2 against Schumacher before grounding out to second base, simultaneously ending the game and his 23-game on-base streak.
Fort Wayne starter John Hussey (3-0) earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings. Schumacher picked up his fourth save.
Lansing starting pitcher Ryan Shopshire (2-2) took the loss, reached for six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
In defeat, Schimpf went 2-for-5 with three RBIs for Lansing while teammate Sobolewski went 3-for-5.
Six different TinCaps players notched multi-hit efforts, led by a 2-for-3, 4-RBI performance by third baseman Edinson Rincon.
The Nuts return home on Monday, May 10, for the start of a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps. Left-hander Aaron Loup (2-0, 1.74) will start for the Lugnuts in the opener, slated for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch, opposed by touted West Michigan left-hander Jacob Turner (0-0, 2.13).

Captains double up Lugnuts in extras, 6-3

LANSING, Mich. – Delvi Cid's two-run single capped a three-run tenth inning rally, sending the Lake County Captains (9-0) to a 6-3 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (3-6) on Friday night on Jackson Field.
All of Lansing's series this season have ended in sweeps, with Lake County's three consecutive victories halting a three-game winning streak the Lugnuts carried home from Great Lakes.
Kyle Smith and Greg Folgia began the tenth inning with consecutive doubles off of reliever Steve Turnbull (0-2), breaking a 3-3 tie. After two groundouts sandwiched around a Casey Frawley walk, Cid sent a bouncer up the middle to plate both Folgia and Frawley.
Rob Bryson (2-0) notched the win for Lake County, holding the Lugnuts off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings. Cory Burns pitched the tenth for his league-leading fourth save.
Lugnuts center fielder Kenny Wilson and pitcher Dustin Antolin were both ejected from the game by home plate umpire Nick Mahrley after Wilson was called out on strikes to lead off the bottom of the tenth.
The ballgame was scoreless through the first four-and-a-half innings before a Ryan Schimpf RBI single and a Mark Sobolewski two-run single put the Lugnuts on the board in the home fifth.
Lake County answered with three runs in the top of the sixth against Lansing starting pitcher Chad Jenkins to tie the score.
The Captains pounded out 15 hits in the game, three each by Bo Greenwell and Kyle Smith, improving their league-leading team batting average to .306.
On Saturday at 4:05 p.m. at Cooley Law School Stadium, the Lugnuts welcome the Bowling Green Hot Rods to town for the opener of a three-game series. Lansing right-hander Ryan Tepera (0-0, 8.10) will start against Bowling Green left-hander Kyle Lobstein (0-0, 0.00).
